KAPIT: The Gawai Dayak and “ngiling bidai” celebrations are platforms to bring people together to further enhance unity and harmony among the various communities, said Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Speaking during a “Majlis Ngiling Bidai Gawai Dayak” held at Rumah Kenyalang, Nanga Sengkaranji, Sungai Menuan here on Monday, Jamit said tolerance and respect for
each other’s tradition, social and religious practices were crucial to ensure a harmonious society in a multi-racial state like Sarawak.

“If we continue to live in peace and harmony, our government can then focus on its development agenda to bring progress to the people and state,” he said to several hundred villagers and community leaders from longhouses along Sungai Menuan, Sungai Belawai and Rajang River.

Also present was Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi who is also the adviser to the Chief Minister’s Department.

Stressing the need to support Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Jamit assured that the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg was committed to bring development to every sector of the society.

“The creation of regional development agencies such as the Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda), Highland Development Agency (HDA) and Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) are testimonies of the government’s commitment to develop the rural areas,” he said.

He cited the proposed Jalan Menuan which would be constructed soon to benefit longhouses along Sungai
Menuan. The project is funded by the GPS state government, he said.

He urged the villagers not to listen to politicians who would approach them before and during elections with promises they could not deliver.
