KUCHING: The newly renovated Dewan Sri Keranji is expected to benefit the folks in Kampung No. 3 and ensure a continuous pipeline of sepak takraw athletes in Sarawak.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki expressed that with the renovations fully completed, he hoped that the community here would be able to fully utilise the hall and organise sepak takraw sports, which the village is famous for.

“This is where (sepak takraw) legends are made – in this village. Therefore, I hope we can produce more in the future,” he said.

He said this after witnessing the handing over of the project from contractor Ibrahim Mokarat of Wangi Abadi Construction Sdn Bhd to Sri Keranji sepak takraw club deputy chairman Jaya Awang here today (Jan 15).

Meanwhile, the special officer to the assemblyman, Azmi Hipni, expressed his confidence that the said hall will have an impact on the community here.

He said that aside from the sepak takraw, the folks here will be able to use the hall to organise various other programmes.

“It is not only for programmes such as sepak takraw but also to be a place for training silat.

“This hall can be a place where young prospects from the village train to be future athletes who would go on to represent Sarawak at a higher level,” he said when met by the reporters.

At the same time, Sri Keranji sepak takraw club committee member Sharkawi Taibi said the upgrading project involves repairing the hall’s roof, fixing its lights, working the flooring, and repainting.

He said to commemorate the handing over of the newly renovated hall, the club also organised a sepak takraw ball juggling competition.

“The competition is open to all and is divided into two categories. The first is age 15 and below, and the other category is for 15 years old and above.

“For the senior category, the champion will be given a prize money of RM300, while the first runner-up will bring home RM200, and the second runner-up will win RM100.

“For the other category, the winners will be given hampers as their prize,” he said.

For the record, the renovation work started in September last year and was completed on Nov 20, which is earlier than scheduled.
