SIBU: The construction of the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Campus here is a significant and cherished gift for all residents, including staff, students, and the community.

UTS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the hall was built in recognition and memory of the invaluable contributions of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud since the establishment of UTS and as a tribute to Taib as the first chancellor of UTS until today.

“The construction of this hall, costing approximately RM150 million, began in September 2019 and was initially scheduled for completion in July 2022.

“However, unavoidable delays occurred due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

“The construction project of the hall was finally completed in June 2023,” he said at the official launching ceremony by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the hall here today (August 6).

Khairuddin said that the hall consists of three main halls, each accommodating approximately 850 people.

“The three main halls can be combined into one grand hall, which can accommodate a capacity of nearly 2,800 people for seminars and around 2,000 people for banquets,” he said.

Additionally, the hall is also equipped with three seminar rooms, each with a capacity of 130 people.

“For the convenience of users and visitors, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall also provides parking space for 340 cars and 60 motorcycles.

“Furthermore, the hall is furnished with kitchen facilities and catering services equivalent to a 5-star hotel, making it suitable for official government and corporate events, conferences, and wedding receptions,” he added.

Apart from its unique and attractive design, the building is also equipped with high-quality acoustic systems, a digital water feature, elegant interior lighting, and locally inspired carpet designs.

“We have been eagerly waiting for a hall like this for a long time. Coinciding with UTS’ 10th anniversary celebration, this chancellor’s hall is the most special gift for all members of the campus, including staff, students, and the community in Sibu.

“We extend our gratitude to the Premier and the Sarawak government for approving this project, making it a reality today, and using it for the first time during the 7th UTS Convocation Ceremony,” he said.
