SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) staff and students are encouraged to contribute back to the community.
This advice was echoed by UTS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, pointing out that the less fortunate should not be forgotten, especially during festive season.
“I urge our staff and students to arrange more activities within the community, particularly for those in need, such as residents of orphanages and elderly care homes.
“We should instill this core value of giving back among our students,” he said in his speech at the UTS Festival Celebration held at the university’s Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall yesterday.
The UTS Festival Celebration coincided with four festive occasions: Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Hari Gawai and Hari Raya Korban.
Khairuddin emphasised that the celebration demonstrated how Sarawak, with its diverse population, has successfully maintained unity.
“As an educational institution, it is our responsibility to uphold, preserve, and strengthen this unity passed down by our elders. We must not take it for granted,” he added.
Also present were Khairuddin’s wife Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain, UTS’s deputy vice chancellor (Academic), Prof Dr. Mohammad Shahril Osman and UTS registrar (academic affairs and registry department) Jimmy De Rozario.
