SRI AMAN: For Dayak handicraft enthusiasts, the Gawai Bazaar at the old Pasar Tamu in Sri Aman here is a shopping paradise. A recent survey at the market found a variety of Dayak handicraft ranging from beadworks, bags, clothing baju burung and others. Some of the lots at the Gawai Bazaar are also allocated for selling food and drinks.

“This Gawai Bazaar began operating last Sunday. I understand that it is being organised by the Gendang Pampat Association in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration.

“Bukit Begunan Assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang is expected to officially declare this bazaar open on May 19,” said a source at the bazaar. He said the Gawai Bazaar offers a platform for the locals to promote their Dayak handicraft as well as to increase their income during the season.

“We hope that the Gendang Pampat Association will continue to hold such event during the Gawai season in the coming years,” he said. It is found that hundreds of visitors are flooding to the bazaar every evening after 5.30 pm. The bazaar will end on May 26.
