SIBU: University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) yesterday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with its first industry partner from China, Gezhouba Engineering (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd (CGGC).

Its vice chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the university has been signing many MOUs with other universities and institutions of higher learning.

“Today’s MoU is significant because our partner which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Gezhouba International Engineering Co. Ltd. will be the main contractor for the Baleh Hydroelectric Power Station project here in Sarawak,” he said at the signing ceremony.

Khairuddin pointed out that UTS was in need of industry partners who could provide real-life experience and opportunities for its students.

“Therefore, with this MOU we agree to cooperate in talent development, cultural exchanges and internship training, especially in the areas related to hydropower, engineering, infrastructure and new energy power station projects in Sarawak.

“We also agree to establish an information sharing and communication mechanism in order to facilitate the cooperation between the two parties,” he said.

He said that as a start, both UTS and CGGC have agreed to entrust the Confucius Institute at UTS to provide relevant language training programmes for local employees.

“The Confucius Institute at UTS will also help to promote language classes, cultural activities and exchanges by engaging with staff of CGGC who are based in Sarawak with students and staff of UTS.

“At the same time, the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at UTS will work closely with CGGC to initiate the student and training internship programmes.

“And finally, all of us at UTS will support and encourage any form of academic collaborations such as to invite engineers from CGGC as our industry expert to give lectures or talk to our students and staff,” he said.

Meanwhile, president of International Business CGGC, Deng Yinqi, expressed his gratitude to UTS for the warm and thoughtful reception.

“This meeting is significant for the long-term development of CGGC in Malaysia; to further enhance the cooperation between Chinese enterprises and local universities; to promote communication exchanges between China and Malaysia; and to enhance the friendship between both countries,” he said.

He hoped that the university-enterprise cooperation would be successful in creating a pool of brilliant workforce for the state.
