BINTULU: Longhouse folk in Rumah Jalong Nanga Buan Tatau, are advised to grow profitable crops to earn extra income.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Sarawak Bumiputera Law and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai citing chili padi cultivation as a cash crop plant.

“Chili padi is a cash crop fetching a good price in the market,” he said.

He added that the land at Nanga Buan, is suitable for growing vegetables, not to mention its location.

“Nanga Buan’s soil is fertile for vegetable farming, plus its location adjacent to Tatau and Bintulu town,” he said.

He said this on Saturday, during a meet the people session at Rumah Jalong, Nanga Buan, Tatau.

He emphasised on how agriculture is a good opportunity for one to make extra income.

Sikie added, the government has introduced various kind of schemes to make agriculture a profitable sector.

“Various schemes or initiatives have been rolled out by the government for the rakyat in farming,” he said.

On another note, Sikie has reminded the longhouse folk to preserves their culture and ensuring the generations after them would have the same sense of responsibility.

“Preserve the ‘napok’, and ‘bersuwei’ in the longhouse, as these are our crucial heritage and culture,” he said.

During the programme, Sikie also announced allocation of RM20,000 to Rumah Jalong’s JKKK and RM5,000 to the longhouse’s women bureau.
