KAPIT: The Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association, Kapit branch (PVATM), led by chairman Martin Bilun, gave financial assistance to one of its members, 78-year-old Ladong Sabut, who is handicapped.

The ceremony was held to coincide with the Warriors Day celebration here recently. Accompanying Martin were secretary Usa Dana, Kapit PVATM members Tuai Rumah Kassaw Bantil and Bilun Mandaw.

Ladong suffers from diabetes, and one of his legs had to be amputated. He undergoes haemodialysis treatment thrice a week.

Originally from Ulu Baleh, he erected a hut on an open space (private land) opposite Bank Rakyat along Jalan Airport here. With him is his wife who looks after his daily necessities.

Ladong also receives social welfare aid monthly. A former Sarawak Rangers member, Ladong saw action during the Confrontation in the 60s.

Meanwhile, Martin said this year, Kapit PVATM cancelled the opening ceremony for the Warriors Day celebration as a Covid-19 preventive measure.

“The majority of our veterans are in their late 60s and 70s. They are fragile in terms of their immune system. Therefore, we cancelled the opening ceremony.

“This time, we focused on visiting those who are less fortunate in their old age,” explained Martin, a former Warrant Officer II.
