HANOI: Vietnam’s Cinema Department has requested Netflix Vietnam and FPT Telecom JSC to remove the Chinese film “Flight To You” as it contains scenes of the nine-dash line that violates Vietnam’s sovereignty.

In a dispatch Sunday, the watchdog said that it has reviewed all 39 episodes of the series and found that the image of the nine-dash line appears on the maps in episodes 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30 and 38, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

Though FPT had blurred the images of the maps, the department said the film is not suitable for screening in Vietnam as it contains inappropriate content, infringing upon national sovereignty.

The department requested Netflix Vietnam and FPT to remove the film within 24 hours starting from 0:00 on July 10, and then send a report to the Department before July 12.

Recently, the anticipated Blockbuster movie ‘Barbie’ has been banned in Vietnam over a scene that features a map showing the South China Sea — a strategically important body of water that’s highly contested by China and a number of its neighbours, many of whom have close ties to the United States (US).

Warner Bros defended its picture Friday, saying the map is nothing more than a “child-like crayon drawing” and certainly not any kind of political statement. – BERNAMA-VNA
