KUCHING: Villagers from the Seberang Hilir area are encouraged to showcase their items with historical values which can be considered as heritage artefacts for a museum.

The call was made by Rural Electricity Assistant Minister Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi during a prize presentation ceremony at the Darul Hana Carnival 2019 at Petra Jaya here, today.

“One of the important elements of the carnival is the “Pesta Mensia Marek” where the community is welcomed to showcase their old items with historical or nostalgic values.

“During my visit earlier, I saw a lot of interesting items used in the past but no longer used today such as an old screen projector and rotary-dial telephone. One of the objectives in holding the “Pesta Mensia Marek” is to identify artefacts which can be exhibited in a museum,” he pointed out.

He added, “If you are no longer using those items, the museum would have a place for them. Therefore, you are welcome to sell them to the museum so that the items could be preserved for the future generations to see.”

The Pantai Damai assemblyman also said that endowment (donation) of the items is encouraged.

“You can just hand over the items for free to show your support to the museum. The museum will then display your name when the item is exhibited,” he explained.

“Besides, you can also choose to rent the items to the museum and perhaps you and the museum can reach a contract for one to two years as long as you can make the items available to be showcased to the people. It is important to do this so that we can preserve the heritage items which are passed down to us by our ancestors to the younger generations,” he concluded.

The Darul Hana Carnival was organised to celebrate the community of Kampung Seberang Hilir in their preparation to move to a new residential area which to be named Darul Hana.

Among those present were Dr Abdul Rahman’s wife Datin Siti Shorgayah Mohd Zaidin, Land Custody and Development Authority (Pelita) chief executive officer Datuk Sejeli Kipli, Darul Hana Development Project special officer Muhamad Yakup Kari and Pemanca Roshidi Junai.
