BAU: Villagers have every right to determine who they think is best suited to be their ketua kampung (village chief), said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

He added that if the village chief did not perform his or her duties well, then villagers have the right to choose a new leader.

“The village chief is elected through a voting process in which the villagers take part in. They are not appointed by elected representatives,” he said.

He said this during a handing over of duties ceremony of the Kampung Suba Buan village chief at the village’s community hall last Saturday.

“The village chief plays an important role in leading the village to move forward.

“He or she must be proactive and attentive to whatever that is happening in the village,” he said.

On the handing of duties ceremony, Karim Lidek was chosen as the new Kampung Suba Buan village chief last year where he replaced Latip Nyaim who held the post for seven years.
