KUCHING: The idea of a virtual Dewan Rakyat or State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting must include having it shown live and accessible by the people, said Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang.
He said a virtual session could be considered as an alternative to the current sitting where members are physically present in view of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country.
“That’s a great idea, but it must be shown ‘live’ for the people to see. Only then will it serve the purpose,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.
The idea a virtual Parliament session was first brought onto the spotlight when Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday that the government was mulling over the proposal as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Although the matter is not provided for in the Standing Orders of Parliament, it could be done by including for such provision.
To this, Idris said, “Let’s see how it goes in the parliament. If the proposal goes through smoothly, our State Legislative Assembly may adopt the system as a new normal for lawmakers.”
