KUCHING: The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is not a place to be missed.

Located approximately 24km from the city, the centre offers a chance to travellers to witness semi-wild orangutans enjoying their life in a secure natural habitat.

An observation made by New Sarawak Tribune found that many visitors, both locals and international tourists alike, throng the wildlife centre even on weekdays.

Park ranger Mohd Yazid said more than 50 visitors would come to visit in a day.

“During weekends, there are many visitors, with more than 100 tickets sold among the locals alone.

“The highest number of visitors was 877 guests during Wesak,” he said, adding that the number of visitors increased, especially after the reopening of the country’s borders.

The off-seasons would be somewhere around November and ends once the fruiting season is over, but could be prolonged until June.

“The longest off-season we encountered was six months (November until June). There’s no sighting of orangutans during those times,” Yazid said.

On today (July 6), visitors were delighted to spot Seduku, a 51-year-old orang utan, dubbed the ‘Grand Old Lady’ alongside a young male, Ganya, 14.

Ganya was seen swinging from tree to tree and visitors got to see him up close during feeding time. He was quick to devour the bananas from the food basket.

The wildlife centre visiting hours in the morning start from 8 am until 10 am followed by the afternoon session from 2 pm until 4 pm.

Meanwhile, feeding time in the morning starts at 9 am until 10 am while the afternoon session begins at 3 pm until 4 pm.

The entrance fees are: Locals – adults (RM5); children, 6-18 years (RM2) and senior citizens (RM3). Foreigners – adults (RM10), children, 6-18 years (RM5) and senior citizens (RM5).
