KUCHING: Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said it was important to detect as many Covid-19 cases in Kuching-Samarahan-Serian as possible.

“Let’s not have low numbers because if we don’t aggressively test, later on, we may end up with so many symptomatic cases overnight,” he said in a Facebook post last Sunday (May 23).

He also urged the authorities to take legal action against individuals including those infected by Covid-19 if they had breached the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of the virus.

Doing so would increase awareness and prevent more positive cases, Dr Sim said.

“Our number one priority at this critical stage of Covid-19 is to keep everyone alive,” he said.

Dr Sim added he expected the number of Covid-19 cases in Kuching to remain high because of the mass screenings at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Covid-19 One Stop Centre at Padungan.

He expressed fear that the South African Covid-19 variant might be spreading in Kuching.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) director Prof Dr David Perera recently revealed that seven cases of the South African Covid-19 variant were detected in Kuching district.
