KUCHING: Another political analyst has weighted in on speculation that Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will be appointed the next Sarawak governor, saying it will not affect the state’s political landscape.

Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman

Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman said with the current political stability in Sarawak and mutual understanding among component parties, the appointment is unlikely to create any political turbulence.

“If he were to be appointed, I believe those involved in selecting the next governor would have discussed this matter thoroughly.

“Of course several names have been mentioned in the public sphere to be the next governor. That being said, there might already be consensus from the committee.

“If he (Wan Junaidi) or any other person is appointed, politically they have to honour the decision made by the committee,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday (Jan 20).

Mohd Fadzil said if Wan Junaidi were to assume the role of governor it could significantly contribute to the state’s development, given his extensive political experience.

He explained that his experience would position him well to collaborate closely with the state government, contributing to the progress of Sarawak and serving as a role model for Sarawakians

“With his background as a federal minister and a seasoned local politician who has held various positions, including the Dewan Negara president, I don’t anticipate any problems,” he added.

He also cautioned against premature speculation, stating that the public should wait for an official statement.

Dr Lee Kuok Tiung

Meanwhile, political analyst Dr Lee Kuok Tiung from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) described Wan Junaidi as a fitting candidate for the position, based on his background, legislative experience, and unblemished record, having never been associated with controversy.

He drew attention to Wan Junaidi’s role as a legislator and Member of Parliament, where he played a pivotal role in making the #Undi18 initiative into reality, showcasing his commitment to democratic reforms.

He also paid tribute to the contributions of the current Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, stating that the foundation of Sarawak’s current economic strength was built by him.
