KUCHING: Santubong incumbent Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has decided to step down and give way to another candidate to contest in his seat in the 15th General Election (GE15)

This was revealed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who noted that Wan Junaidi had personally stated his intent to sit out the upcoming election.

However, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman said he has not given his final decision on whether to let Wan Junaidi to step down from his seat or not.

“He told me that he wanted to step down but I have yet to decide (to let him step down or not),” he said.

He said this during a press conference after launching the GPS Women Machinery at Penview Convention Centre today (Oct 30).

When asked what is the actual reason for him wanting to step down, Abang Johari replied, “he (Wan Junaidi) said that he is now 77-years-old and wants to do other things (outside of politics).

“However, even if he is not an MP anymore, he said that he will still be advising us,” he said.

For the record, Wan Junaidi is one of the longest-serving MP in Sarawak who served for 32 years since 1990 where he started as Batang Lupar MP.

In 2004, he switched constituencies with Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim to Santubong Parliament.
