KUCHING: Police are searching for a man suspected of impersonating an officer and in connection with an alleged scam involving losses totalling RM14,563.

State Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said the police are looking for the suspect Syed Haidil Syed Ahmad, 37, to assist police investigation into two scam cases involving two locals.

According to him, the first report was received on Feb 16, 2016 from a 28-year-old woman while the second scam victim was a 50-year-old who lodged a report on Sept 4, 2018.

“The first case involves the suspect, who impersonated a policeman and cheated a woman under the pretext of assisting her to manage the life insurance of her deceased husband and asking for a sum of RM8,600.

“The second victim was cheated of RM5,963 where the suspect offered to sell three motorcycles and two cars to be disposed of by the government to the victim,” he said in a statement yesterday

Mustafa added that both victims lodged a police report after realising they had been cheated by the suspect.

He noted that two investigation papers have been opened against the suspect under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

Mustafa also urged the public to channel information or come forward to assist the police in tracking the suspect.
