KUCHING: The Malay-Muslim faction in opposition parties in Sarawak will stand little chance of winning any seat in the upcoming state election even if they form a united front in the mould of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan).

Political observer Datuk Peter Minos said it is not easy to dislodge Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) from their Malay-Muslim majority seats.

“PBB has long looked after Bumiputera areas in Sarawak that include Malay and Melanau constituencies. So far so good and the Malays and Melanaus are generally happy.

“From one election to the next, local opposition parties and those from Malaya had tried to tackle PBB but failed. This round it will be the same.

“Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) are based in Malaya, they can try but I do not think they will succeed as they know very little or nothing about Sarawakians,” he said.

Minos said while the opposition wanted to play the role of check and balance to the government, they would first have to win seats in the election.

The veteran politician said if the opposition wanted to have a serious chance of winning any of the Muslim majority seats, it needed to be responsible and dish out practical ideas instead of mere rhetoric.

“As I see it now, the opposition is being very negative. Only hitting and criticising but nothing else. At times they turned to instigating and always finding faults,” he said.
