KUCHING: Daily habits among the community on solid waste management need to change to bring about environmental well-being.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said in this instance the practice of recycling and maintaining cleanliness, especially in residential areas, must start from the grassroots.

“This needs to be done, starting from ourselves as adults, at the same time educating and nurturing the children to do the same thing at home or at school.

“Thus, the Zero Plastic Use Campaign Programme which is carried out is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda which is highly emphasised by MPP,” he said.

He said this at the Zero Single Used Plastic Campaign 2022 colouring competition prize giving ceremony at SJK Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru, today.

Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, added that the existence of such a programme can increase awareness among students and the school community about the effects of plastic waste disposal on human health and the environment.

“This programme is a collaboration between government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) namely MPP, SJK Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru and Fly Technology Agriculture Sdn.Bhd.

“It is my hope that this close collaboration can contribute to the expertise and energy needed for mutual benefit, including students and local residents,” he said.

According to him, MPP is well aware of the issue of solid waste management and environmental conservation as it is always brought up in meetings.

“Therefore, the public is reminded to always bear responsibility as a community in preserving the cleanliness and well-being of the environment,” he said.

Also present were MPP deputy chairman Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.
