KUCHING: Villagers are reminded to be on the lookout for illegals crossing the border through various rat trails connecting Sarawak and Kalimantan.

According to State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, community leaders and villagers in areas near the borders of Sarawak need to play their roles during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We ask the people (at these locations) to report to the authorities, sightings of unidentified persons using rat trails.

“It is important that we block as many rat trails as possible (to curb the spread of Covid-19),” he said in a press conference on Monday (Aug 24).

He added that the Sarawak Health Department would also step up its surveillance in various ports throughout the state beginning today (Aug 25).

“From all fronts, we are trying to detect all Covid-19 cases early so that it would be easier for us to do contact tracing and break the chain of infection (from detected cases).

“This is the way forward for us in solving this issue,” he said.

He pointed out that SDMC would continue to formulate strategies on order to take appropriate actions to ensure that the Covid-19 chain can be broken.

“For frontliners, they also do their best, the same goes for those who are along our borders, everyone is playing their part,” he added.

In that regard, Uggah urged the people to play their roles, and not be complacent in view on the few Covid-19 cases in the state.
