SIMUNJAN: Three hundred and fifty boxes of mineral water were given to residents by the Samarahan Social Welfare Office in Simunjan today.

The absence of rain this month has caused a water crisis for residents of Kampung Sungai Alit, Tanjung Sabang and Tanjung Tanglong which is located along the waterfront area here.

This has caused them to use clean reservoir water to continue their daily activities.

“An application letter for water supply was sent to the Samarahan Social Welfare Office on March 27 to reduce their burden due to water crisis in the longhouse,” Tanjung Sabang village head Tuai Rumah Tawi said.

The delivery of 132 boxes of water supply (12 bottles x 1.5 litres) was brought to his village where its population consists of 23 families and 66 villagers.

In Kampung Sungai Alit, 22 families and 67 villagers received 134 boxes of mineral water and for Tanjung Tanglong, nine families and 42 villagers received 84 boxes of mineral water.

The journey took almost half an hour by using the villagers’ boats from the Simunjan jetty to Tanjung Sabang and Tanjung Tanglong while four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles were used for transportation to Kampung Sungai Alit.

“It has been almost a month without any rain and villagers were forced to seek help from the Samarahan Social Welfare Office,” he told.

Furthermore, he stated that the villagers in these three areas are entirely dependent on rain as their main water source.
