BINTULU: The Sarawak government is currently exploring the construction of a wave breaker to tackle the siltation problem at the mouth of the Kemena River.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged the concerns raised earlier by Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing regarding this issue.

“We are now studying the matter and intend to construct a wave breaker and when this is being done, dredging works in Kuala Kemena will also need to be undertaken.

“This initiative is already part of our planning. Next step is to find funding for the state.

“If Tiong can request some (money) from Kuala Lumpur. It will be better. We (federal and state governments) can share one-to-one funding to develop Kuala Kemena and then build the wave breaker,” he said.

He said this during Progressive Democratic Party’s (PDP) Chinese New Year Open House at the Dewan Suarah here today.

Earlier, Tiong urged Abang Johari to consider allowing dredging works at the mouth of the Kemena River.

“I hope the Premier can take into account the requests of the fishermen association.

“The challenge lies in the fishing boats as they encounter difficulties when navigating the shallow sections at the river mouth,” he said.
