KUCHING: Sarawak police is assertive with the e-hailing system regulations, which include safety features especially on tracking down drivers or passengers during services.

State Crime Prevention and Community Security chief Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said every e-hailing company is equipped with the Know Your Customer (KYC) system, a feature that protects both the driver and passenger, in which personal details of both parties will be shown upon request of the services.

All routes taken are traceable, and the police would be able to do the tracking when dealing with any untoward or crime related incidents. However, the matter could be complicated if it involved passengers using fake identifications as part of their criminal attempts.

Muhammed said this in response to a question asked regarding an incident which involved an e-hailing driver who was robbed and murdered before his body was disposed of at a bush in Kampung Shahbandar, Tuaran, Sabah recently, and the state police’s preventive approach here in Sarawak.

“Grab has all the features equipped including KYC that will be obtained by the both the driver and passenger and this is traceable by the company, to which the perpetrator has no way to run. Unless they are using other identification card (IC), that will be out of our jurisdiction,” he said.

He said this during a press conference after officiating at the 15th Ops Selamat (OP15) in conjunction with the Hari Gawai-Raya which begins May 29 to June 12, themed “Safe House and Safe to the Destination” held at Kubah Ria today.

He pointed out that the operation aimed at creating awareness and instil courteous values among road users and emphasis on safety aspects.

The Ops Selamat is also carried out to ensure the safety and security of unattended houses left behind by families who will be heading back to their respective hometowns this festive season.

“We want the public to return to their hometown safely and not to worry about their belongings left behind as everything are rest assured,” he said.
