There has been no discussion on a referendum on Sarawak’s position in Malaysia at the steering committee level.
Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said there were no talks on other matters other than Sarawak’s claims to its rights.
“This is our Sarawak government’s stance… Our fights in reclaiming our rights must be done within the perimeters of the Federal Constitution, within the legitimate laws of Malaysia, and in the context of Malaysia,” she told the August House.
Hasidah was replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya (GPS-Jemoreng) if the federal government’s failure to fulfil Sarawak’s requirement, would prompt the state to go for a referendum.
She also replied to a question from Dr Hazland Abang Hipni (GPS-Demak Laut) on Sarawak rights in oil and gas resources as stipulated under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“Negotiations between the federal and Sarawak governments on our claimed rights are being done in a smooth manner.
“And as for our oil and gas rights, all these are being discussed and will be looked into comprehensively,” she added.
She thanked the federal government for agreeing to set up the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to further discuss Sarawak’s rights under the MA63 at the federal level.
“These are positive actions and steps taken by the federal and Sarawak governments,” said Hasidah.
