KUCHING: Chinese independent schools here will follow the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) standard operating procedure (SOP) on schools reopening to ensure the safety of its staff and students.

Board of Management Committee for Kuching Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No.1, 3 and 4 chairmen Datuk Richard Wee said the schools had received the SOP yesterday and were studying it to see if any additional safety measures were required.

“For us, we will follow the SOP and our schools will also try our best to see whether we are able to do anything over and above the requirement of the SOP.

“But we are still trying to get familiar with the SOP. By next week we should be able to come out with a more detailed announcement,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

Wee said the schools would also make sure that students would not gather and to leave school and go straight home as soon as the classes were dismissed.

“To ensure the SOP and social distancing is practised at all time, there would not be any extra curriculums or school related activities outside,” he added.

He said school security personnel would help to facilitate in ensuring the students adhere to the SOP and control the situation in the school compound.

Schools nationwide have been temporarily closed since the implementation of the movement control order on March 18 in efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Ministry of Education has yet to make an official announcement when schools will reopen.

However, its minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin had previously said the ministry would announce it two weeks prior to reopening.
