BATU PAHAT: Roti canai seller Mohd Suffian Md Ali has his own novel way of showing his patriotism on National Day this year by having 15 Jalur Gemilang-themed outfits sewn for himself and his family.

Other than decorating his shop with the Malaysian flag in various sizes and shapes since starting his business four years ago, the 36-year-old man, who was popular for his ‘flying roti canai’ among local residents here, said his family would wear the Jalur Gemilang attire to show love and pride for the country.

“We will wear the custom-made Jalur Gemilang outfits for a month, from Aug 16 until Sept 16 (Malaysia Day) to show our pride and patriotism.

“My wife, Norshelyza Talib, 35 and our three daughters, aged between 11 and 16 years, are excited when told that they would be wearing the colourful outfits,” he told Bernama at his shop, Pyan & Sally Roti Terbang in Kampung Mohd Noor, Tongkang Pechah here.

Besides making his stall vibrant and unique during the National Day, Mohd Suffian said he
wanted to instil in his children the spirit of patriotism and to make them understand how difficult it was for the country to achieve its
independence.

The family would spend about RM350 for the 15 outfits and flags to decorate his shop, Mohd Suffian said.

“The idea of celebrating the National Day in style cropped up when I was working in Australia a few years ago when I saw many Malaysians abroad jubilantly celebrating the auspicious occasion despite being away from home.

“For me, there is no reason we don’t celebrate the National Day, even more so since we are in our own backyard,” he added. – Bernama
