KUCHING: Yayasan Sarawak’s board of trustees has welcomed Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat as a new member.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Sim Kui Hian revealed this in a late-night Facebook post yesterday (Jan 15) and congratulated Wee.

“I am highly confident that Datuk Wee, with his vast personal experience in the field of education, will be able to contribute to Yayasan Sarawak, which has been entrusted to facilitate and further the aims of Sarawak’s education by awarding scholarships and loans to Sarawakian students in the last 50 years.

“Hundreds of millions of ringgit every year have been allocated as we continue to develop and enhance our human resources development in the past, present, and for our future, especially in the pursuit of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” said Dr Sim.

Wee, who also serves as the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian Divisions president, is one of the community leaders who has been outspoken in calling on the government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

When Wee was re-elected as the federation’s president in August last year, he expressed gratitude to the Sarawak government for recognising the UEC.

On the same note, Wee also appreciated the annual grant given to Chinese independent schools.

For the record, the chairman of Yayasan Sarawak’s board of trustees is Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and the deputy chairman is State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

Wee will join the board’s current members, who include Yayasan Sarawak director Mersal Abang Rosli, former Machan assemblyman Datuk Seri Gramong Juna, Education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad, and State Financial Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar.
