KUCHING: The first edition of the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open saw the participation of experienced weightlifters and newcomers.

The Kuching Weightlifting Association (KWA) said the championship, held on May 18, at the CFK Training Ground here drew a mix of experienced athletes and newcomers.

“With the upcoming SUKMA 2024 event set to take place in Sarawak, the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open, provided a vital platform for weightlifting athletes to prepare.

“The competition was intense, highlighting the talent in weightlifting,” the association said in a press statement.

KWA president Carter Wei said the association was thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm for the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open.

“This event not only provided valuable preparation for SUKMA 2024 but also promoted inclusivity and sportsmanship within the weightlifting community

“The event was made possible through the collaboration of various organisations, including the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), national Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Sarawak Weightlifting Association (SWA) and Kuching Weightlifting Association (KWA).

“Their support and dedication were instrumental in ensuring the success of the event,” he said.

Wei said that the event not only showcased athletic prowess but also boosted health and fitness tourism in Sarawak.

He said the event promoted Sarawak as a destination for wellness enthusiasts and could enhance tourism while encouraging youth involvement in weightlifting.

“We are grateful for the support of our partners, participants, and the community in making this event a success.

“We look forward to building on this momentum and organising an even more impactful event next year,” Wei added.

A total of four categories were contested, and the winners of each category were Marthina Chan (Elite Women), Charlene Bong (Open Women), Felix Tujang (Elite Men) and Tay Kian Pei (Open Men).
