KUCHING: Regaining Sarawak’s rights has nothing to do with politics, but simply reclaiming the genuine rights of the state as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Veteran lawyer Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar stated this in response to last week’s meeting on MA63 in Kuala Lumpur.

“I welcome a good and favourable outcome of this continued effort. We started the discussions and meetings since 2015 and have achieved much under the previous government,” he said.

“Sarawak is not demanding more than what we have agreed to in the MA63 and the Federal Constitution. But I would like to hear the good tidings from the state team.”

He urged all the state representatives, MPs and assemblymen alike, especially those from Pakatan Harapan (PH), to be supportive of the state government’s efforts.

He described Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as a very reasonable man with a strong and sincere intention to struggle for the benefit of Sarawak as a whole.

“With a strong financial position, he and the state government would be able to develop Sarawak, so all Sarawakians in urban or rural areas enjoy the fruits of independence such as roads, bridges, piped water, electricity, Internet and other utilities/facilities that developed countries take for granted,” he said.

He further said the chief minister’s vision for a developed Sarawak by the year 2030 should not be obstructed by the politics of personal glory seekers.

“Resources like oil and gas are truly ours. The federal government and its administrators at any level must realise that they are holding them in trust for us,” he said.

Wan Junaidi, who is also the MP Santubong, had urged the federal government to repeal all the laws, regulations and procedures that have eroded much of Sarawak’s rights.

“It must not be looked at with indifference or cynicism by anyone, especially the federal government or its representatives.”
