KUCHING: The Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) has questioned the federal government’s non-commitment in recognising the United Examination Certificate (UEC).

“SPA is wondering what is the fuss in recognising a good certificate that will benefit the rakyat?

“If a certificate is worth the recognition, why not encourage it with funding like any other national standard certificates?” asked SPA wanita chief Brenda Yong.

She congratulated CHMS No 1 principal Yap Chong Guan for emphasising and requesting the speedy and unconditional recognition of UEC by the federal government.

Yong said as a UEC holder herself, she felt the time was appropriate to follow through what SPA had spoken about nine months ago on the recognition of UEC.

On the Ministry of Education’s statement that to recognise the UEC would require five years to study the basis, standard and qualification of UEC Syllabus, Yong said it was painful to learn that such a highly structured certificate needed to be scrutinised in such a manner.

She said SPA also congratulated the late chief minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem for his courage and wise decision in recognising UEC in Sarawak as well as generously funding the Independent Chinese Schools throughout the state.

SPA is also giving a big applause to the GPS government led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg who has relentlessly continued the good work of Tok Nan.

Yong said in fact, GPS not only continued to recognise UEC but also upped the ante on funding the Independent Chinese schools statewide.
