SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) wants the federal government to emulate the state in recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

This was one of the three resolutions adopted at the party’s Bukit Assek branch triennial general meeting cum election of new office-bearers here today.

“What is our federal government waiting for?,” asked Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

“We hope for its due recognition by the federal government since it has been recognised by the State government and well accepted by overseas universities as well as University Technology of Sarawak (UTC),” he said at a press conference after the branch’s TGM.

Chieng who is also the newly elected deputy chairman of the branch said the second resolution was to urge the government to set a ceiling price for air fares especially for Sarawak.

He said it was very unfair to charge high fares especially during festive seasons as not all planning to return home for a reunion with their families could afford such fares.

It is very upsetting, he said.

The third resolution, he said, is to urge the government to open a new air route from Sibu to Singapore which will not only serve the people of Sibu but the entire central region of Sarawak which has a population of one million.

This is to facilitate linkages between the two places in aspects like business, he said, adding the government should look into this issue seriously.

Meanwhile, the branch’s chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon said it has proposed its treasurer Raymond Tiong Eng Lee to be the potential candidate for the Lanang parliamentary constituency for the 15th General Election (GE15).

He said the proposal has been supported and agreed to during the branch’s triennial general meeting.

Also present at the press conference were Tiong, the branch’s youth chief, Phuang Ton Hing and the branch’s women chief, Sii Leh Hung.
