KUCHING: While people are celebrating Hari Raya, there are others who have to make sacrifices and stay away from their families to maintain the security of the nation.

One such group is the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak where all of its personnel are on duty to safeguard the nation’s waters from smugglers.

Its director, First Admiral Maritime Zin Azman Md Yunus, said all the state agency’s officers and members were on duty during the double festive season of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak.

“In view of this double festive season, MMEA is focused on combating the smuggling of firecrackers and fireworks in the country’s border areas.

“Apart from that, the agency will also be on the lookout for illegal immigrants’ movement in and out of the state, at identified hotspots through Op Khas Pagar Laut,” he said.

He said his agency has the services of five vessels to safeguard the state’s vast waters.

“Should there be any emergency, complaint or information regarding suspicious activities at sea, the people should contact the MMEA Sarawak Operations Centre at 082-432544 or MERS 999,” he said.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the Hari Raya celebration, Zin presented Raya goodies to officers and members on duty at the MMEA Sarawak headquarters in Muara Tebas.

The goody packs were a contribution from the MMEA headquarters in Putrajaya.
