KUCHING: Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) potential candidate for Batu Lintang Alex Leong had expressed his concern over who may vote in the Sarawak elections.

He said with the Constitution Amendment Bill (2019) to amend Article 47 and Article 119 to enforce the new voting system, it will be based upon the National Registration database whose registered addresses will determine the polling stations of the voters.

Leong, who is also the Sarawak for Sarawakians spokesman alleged that such automatic registration threatens the voting demographics in Sarawak as this means many non-Sarawakians who have Sarawakian addresses on their identity cards (ICs) will be eligible to vote in Sarawak.

“There are many Malayan teachers, civil servants, military and police personnel, oil and gas personnel working in the oil and gas companies have moved to Sarawak and updated their ICs to Sarawak addresses. Many have also bought houses in Sarawak.

“When voting districts are based on addresses stated on their ICs, they automatically become Sarawak voters,” he said on Saturday (Nov 14).

He therefore hoped that Sarawak lawmakers will realise the seriousness of the issue and take pre-emptive action to prevent Sarawak being swamped by non-Sarawakian voters who can influence the outcome of elections.
