MIRI: After her husband’s death , two years ago to cancer Zurena Wasli has become the sole breadwinner of the family, thanks to the 48-year-old mother of five being a qualified traditional masseur for prenatal massage.

Zurena Wasli, 48.

“My husband died when we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, and during the early phase of his passing, it was hard for the family to adjust, especially our youngest children,” she said to the New Sarawak Tribune recently.

“Its been hard , but we are coping,” she added.

At the moment, Zurena is depending on financial assistance provided by the Baitulmal which she receives once in three months after her husband’s death.

“Due to the pandemic, I was not able to physically work going around massaging my clients,” she said.

Renting a house in Permyjaya Miri with her youngest child aged 11, Zurena said this coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri would be a quiet affair for her and the family.

As two of her eldest children are married and have their own family, for this year’s Hari Raya celebration, Zurena has decided to go celebrate Raya with them.

“But this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not as merry,” she said, adding however that she was fortunate that her older children are able to stand on their own feet.

“My priority now is to raise my youngest child,” she added.
