KUCHING: Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin confirmed that he has applied to join Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) — a component party of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He claimed to have submitted his application a few months ago and is hoping to be welcomed into the party.

“Yes, it is true. I have submitted my application to join the local party in the hopes that they will accept my application,” he said when asked about his application to join PBB.

Willie, who is also the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, said he did not join any political party when the government changed.

“However, I do not deny that I am being parked to support the government, and that I am technically being parked under Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

“This is so that I can bring the numbers to support the government of the day, and I am still supporting the current government,” he said.

He believed that as a member of the government, he was able to provide the (Puncak Borneo) constituency with a great deal of support and growth.

“Therefore, I hope this continues, and I believe we can work together to ensure not only the federal government’s but also the state government’s stability.

“We can only move forward with this political stability and a stable government.

“So I hope that the local party that I have submitted my application to will give due consideration, and I am committed to work together for the betterment for our voters in Puncak Borneo and also our people in Sarawak and our country Malaysia,” he said.

When asked if PBB would accept him, he replied he would leave that up to the party’s leadership.

“Well, that is all up to them. I believe it is too soon for me to respond on their behalf.

“I’ve filed my application, and now it’s up to the top leadership to assess how dedicated I am to my work and to my people.

“They can consider (accepting me into the party) if they think I’m the right person to continue to carry the party flag and represent the people of Puncak Borneo,” said Willie.

Earlier today, Willie was presenting retirement pensions at the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) programme at Kampung Semadang, Jalan Puncak Borneo.

Willie won the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency for the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in the 2014 General Election, defeating Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Jeannoth Sinel.

He left PKR in February 2020 and joined Bersatu the following month.
