KUCHING: An unemployed woman who was accused of trafficking 105.43g of methamphetamine three years ago has been acquitted and released by the High Court here yesterday (June 12).
Judge Dr Alwi Abdul Wahab made the ruling because the prosecution failed to prove that Wee Siang Joo, 28, was guilty under Section 39(b)(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties including the death sentence.
If Wee had been convicted, she could have faced the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane.
After the trial concluded, the court ordered Wee’s immediate release without requiring her to present a defense.
The charge against Wee stated that she allegedly distributed 105.43g of methamphetamine at a residence in Taman Kenny at around 2 pm on September 8, 2020.
On the day of the incident, the police arrested ten individuals, including Wee, at a rented house suspected of being involved in drug-related activities.
During the investigation, the police team found multiple transparent plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu (methamphetamine) in various bags.
The prosecution called five witnesses to establish a prima facie case against the accused.
DPP Ronie Entili handled the prosecution, while Wee was represented by counsel Louis Jarau throughout the proceedings.
