KUCHING: To avoid being fined by the National Registration Department for losing her identity card (IC), a woman here went to the extent of claiming to the police that she was robbed at knifepoint.

District police chief ACP Ashmon Bajah said the 42-year-old woman lodged a police report claiming that she was robbed at about 6.50pm on Thursday (Jan 5) at the Kuching Waterfront area.

“The suspect claimed two men had robbed her at knifepoint when she was in her car, resulting in a loss of about RM2,000 in cash as well as losing her IC, bank cards and mobile phone,” he said in a statement this morning (Jan 8).

Police found her police report to be inconsistent, and upon further questioning, the suspect confessed to lodging a false police report as she had lost her IC for the second time.

“A police report has been filed against the woman for lodging a false police report.

“The case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for a fine of up to RM2,000 in default 6 months jail,” Ashmon added.

He added that 13 false police reports were detected by the Kuching police throughout last year.

“The police would like to remind the public to avoid filing false police reports, which could negatively portray this city as being ridden with crimes,” he explained.
