Woman detained in probe into infant death

LANGKAWI: Police detained a 36-year-old woman to assist with the investigations into the discovery of a dead infant in a black rubbish bag and infested with maggots in Kampung Dato Syed Nahar, Mukim Kuah here yesterday.

Langkawi district police chief Supt Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the woman, a single mother with three children, was arrested last night.

He added the investigation revealed that the baby, whose gender was yet to be ascertained, was a result of the suspect’s relationship with her boyfriend.

“The investigation also showed that the suspect, who worked as a security guard at a school dumped the baby after giving birth at her work place four days ago.

“The suspect claimed to have experienced excessive blood loss before giving birth to the baby and decided to place the baby in the plastic bag before dumping it at the location where the baby was found,” he said.

According to him, the suspect was to be brought to the Langkawi Magistrate Court for a remand order yesterday, and the case would be investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code. – Bernama
