KUCHING: A woman was sentenced to six months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here on Wednesday (Feb 15) for keeping stolen property.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced Delaila, 27, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.

She was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code for possessing the stolen property — a saloon car and a laptop belonging to a Pakistani man — at a supermarket at about 1.30pm on Feb 8.

If convicted, she could be serving a prison term of not less than six months and not more than five years, and fined.

According to the facts of the case, on Feb 5 at around 9.50am, the complainant returned from Pakistan to discover that his rented house had been broken into.

An inspection conducted by the complainant found that a car, a television, personal documents, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, shoes of various brands, jewellery, a gas canister and a laptop were missing.

The complainant then made a police report for further action and investigation.

On Feb 8 at about 1.30pm, police, acting on information, conducted an inspection of a suspicious car following complaints from members of the public that it was using a fake licence plate number.

During the inspection, a man fled while a woman (accused) remained in the vehicle.

A check found that the engine chassis number of the vehicle was the same as the one reported missing.

In addition, a laptop that the woman had was also confiscated.

It was understood that the accused did not know that the vehicle was a stolen car because her male friend informed her that it was a rented from another acquaintance.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
