SIBU: Votes from women are very important to determine Sarawak’s future as approximately 49.79 per cent of voters in Sarawak are women in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

“It is important for women voters to choose GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) to ensure a better future for Sarawak. So, we urge them to vote in the upcoming GE15 as every vote is important,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

.He said this after officiating the Health Awareness Talk and Culinary Workshop organised by the Sarawak Central Region Single Mother Association (PITWITS) at the multi-purpose room of the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), on Today (Oct 30).

He also said that women’s votes can also strengthen the voice of the people of Sarawak to reclaim the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as the state needs to reclaim its autonomous power, especially the 35 per cent of parliament seats in Sabah and Sarawak.

“It should be noted that this matter has only been agreed at committee level and has not yet through parliament.

“That is why we need a strong mandate from the people of Sarawak for GPS in our efforts to voice the rights of Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, regarding PITWITS, he said the association came to see him to apply for land to build their own building.

According to him, at the moment the association used a Sibu Public Works Department (JKR) quarters but it is not conducive and in a poor condition.

“So, I have met with the Land and Survey Department to find a piece of land so that they (PITWITS) can raise funds to build their own building.

“I am also in contact with the Ministry of Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family, and Child Development to collaborate with them to obtain funds so that the mission of this single mother association can be achieved,” he said.
