KAPIT: Women are crucial in keeping track of their children’s whereabouts and preventing the future generation from becoming involved in social issues.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali asserted that the role of women is essential because one of the primary causes of social problems is because parents fail to instil in their kids a sense of religious knowledge and morals.

“As women, especially mothers and wives, it is our responsibility to make sure that our family members stay away from engaging in unhealthy habits like using drugs.

“What does development even mean if our children are left behind and involved in a variety of social issues like teen pregnancy?

“We hope to minimise these unfavourable activities in Kapit if at all possible,” she said at an event here yesterday (Feb 4).

A drug awareness talk from the Sibu National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), a workshop on making traditional beads and dance gymnastics from the Kapit Tari Association are among the other events.

During the programme, Sharifah Hasidah, who is also the chairperson of the Saberkas Women’s Affairs Bureau Committee, also presented Saberkas Prihatin assistance totaling RM300 each to selected students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Kapit, SK Kapit, SK Methodist, SK Sungai Amang and SK Menuan.
