KUCHING: Women are still very much under-represented in politics, be it at the federal or state level, said Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Women chief Datuk Chiew Yen Chew.

That is why she hoped to see more women candidates in the coming state and general elections.

“There are many women who are active in social and political circles and they are more than capable and available to serve the people if given the opportunities.

“Therefore, I hope to see more women candidates fielded in the coming state and general elections,” she told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

She said this when asked to comment on whether the party would field more woman candidates in the coming state and general elections.

“Of course, active participation of women as candidates in the elections will need support of the respective party leaders within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“We need that support and weight to realise that possibility. And I certainly hope our party leaders led by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing would see the relevance of fielding women candidates,” she said. Chiew said that there are about 43,000 women members in PDP.
