KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has revised its constitution to enable a minimum of five members from its Women’s Supreme Council to be appointed to the PBB Supreme Council.

PBB Women chief Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this will enhance women’s representation in Sarawak’s political landscape, adding that the amendment was proposed during the 2022 PBB Convention and was subsequently approved by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), taking effect from June 7, 2023.

“Previously, only the female leader would automatically become the vice president in the party’s Supreme Council and sometimes, for instance, Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali was appointed as assistant secretary, so we have two.

“However, with this amendment, five additional positions within the main supreme council have been designated for members of the Women’s wing,” she told a press conference after the PBB Women’s Supreme Council meeting at its headquarters here today.

The amendment to Article 14 of PBB’s constitution specifies that no more than 32 members, including five members from its Youth wing, five members from its Women wing and two members from its Belia 1828 wing are to be appointed by the PBB president with the approval of the Supreme Council.

Presently, the PBB Supreme Council comprises only two female members: Fatimah herself, serving as vice president, and Hasidah, holding the position of assistant secretary-general.

The amendment was presented by PBB Women secretary Senator Susan Chemerai Anding earlier.
