KUCHING: Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) member Dr Wong Chin Huat should have been given medical treatment, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He was referring an incident on Thursday when Wong was denied medical attention by immigration officers at the Kuching Airport after his blood pressure reading rocketed to hypertensive crisis levels.

Wong was barred from entering Sarawak when he landed at the airport at 4pm as he was on the state’s ‘no entry list’.

Met by reporters after the 27th Yayasan Sarawak Chief Minister’s Special Awards ceremony at the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here on Friday, Abang Johari said there was a standard operating procedure (SOP) in place.

But while he agreed that Wong should have been provided medical service, the chief minister stated “the other side should have noted that he is on the list before sending him over”.

“We’ll leave it (the issue) to the security personnel, because there is a record,” he said.

It was reported that Wong had to seek the help of Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in order to obtain medical attention.

He was flying into Sarawak to speak at a workshop on electoral systems on Friday which was jointly organised by ERC, Bersih 2.0, and non-governmental organisation Engage.
