KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will always try its best to solve all complaints regarding public safety, but more can be achieved with the cooperation of the local community.

Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang stated that the council has been actively providing its services and basic facilities for the benefit of the local community such as road lamps, convex mirrors and speed bumps, especially in ‘black spot’ areas which are famous for criminal activities like drug abuse and theft.

“In addition, we often hear about vandalism which usually refers to the act of destruction of public property such as signboards, recreational parks and so on.

“These crimes may have occurred because the area is too private and uninhabitable so the public could not detect the perpetrators of the crimes.

“So the role of the local authority is to make sure that grass cutting services are carried out in these areas, especially on government-owned land,” he said.

He said this when officiating at a safety dialogue organised by Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in collaboration with MPP at Darul Ehsan Mosque in Kampung Haji Baki here, yesterday.

He further said that MPP has complaint channels such as the Talikhidmat mobile app or WhatsApp hotline at 013-8025566 for the public to submit complaints.

Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, advised the local community to not be afraid of reporting cases to the police either directly through the police station or online via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app which is a new initiative by the PDRM in establishing collaboration and strategic cooperation to prevent crime with the local public as the eyes and ears of the police.

He added that the matters pertaining to crime is not solely the responsibility of the police but also the responsibility of all including the MPP and the local community in working together.

Thus, he commended the organisation of the dialogue as a platform to foster better ties and two-way communication between the local community and the local authorities (MPP and PDRM) and hoped such dialogue can be continued in the future.

“This awareness programme must be done often and continuously so that we can close the space and opportunity for crime doers which are growing like a virus in the community,” he said.

The same event also witnessed Lo presenting a cheque worth RM3,000 to the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of SK Haji Baki represented by its headmaster Mohd Aliff Najmi Abdullah.

Amongst those present were MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, MPP secretary Elizabeth Lo, Padawan district deputy police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong, and Penghulu Kampung Haji Baki, Sabtuyah Yusof.
