KUCHING: The Dayaks are urged to work together in unity in line with the spirit of the Gawai Dayak celebration.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, in making the call, pointed out that past Dayak leaders such as the late Datuk Seri Tra Zehnder had fought to make Gawai Dayak a platform for Dayak unification and identity.
“As the leader of an inclusive Gabungan Parti (GPS) Sarawak government, I sincerely call on the Dayaks in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration to work towards Dayak unity,” he said in his Gawai message Sunday (May 30).
“I sincerely hope that the Dayaks, especially the young, will continue to join forces, and work together towards Dayak unity in line with the dreams of previous leaders,” he said.
Abang Johari added he was pleased that the Dayaks were competitive in the pursuit of the digital technological advancements.
He hoped that they would continue to work together among themselves and with others in the pursuit of development.
The chief minister also urged Sarawakians to preserve the unity and racial harmony in the state, adding that the culture of respect for one another was the cornerstone of unity in Sarawak.
“In celebrating Gawai, let us reflect for a moment that it is not easy to build unity among our people of various races and religions but we have proven we can do it,” he said.
