KUCHING: Labour Day is an annual holiday observed on May 1 to celebrate the achievement of workers.

It’s a day of commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers, hence to promote the awareness of labour rights.

In view of the occasion, New Sarawak Tribune spoke to random workers about their hopes and wishes for this Labour Day.

ANGELINE TAN SIEW WOON, 24, ADMINISTRATION
“I would like to wish a joyful Happy Labour Day to all. It’s time to take a break from your hard labour and relax. For this labour day I probably will go shopping and spend time with my family and friend after all the works. It’s a great time to reset and rest because we deserve it.”

FATIMA AL ZAHARA MERZUKI, 24, ADMIN OFFICER
“Labour Day is a much-awaited holiday by all workers and it’s like a reward for us. For this Labour Day, I want to relax and spend time with my loved one. After all we need to enjoy a good day off before we start working again.”

ELYSIA DAVINA, 24, PROMOTER
“It is Labour Day, and it is finally our time to enjoy and relax as we celebrate our tiredness and contribution for our hardwork. Although it is just one day but the thoughts of celebrating the workers for their contribution and sacrifices means a lot to me. During this Labour Day I just hope that I can get enough rest and just do things that I like before starting my work again.”

NUR RASYIQA IZLYN MOHAMAD ATTAN, 24, TUITION TEACHER
“This special occasion is dedicated to all workers worldwide to honour the invaluable contributions of individuals across various occupations, whose unwavering efforts sustain families and communities. As we commemorate this day, I look forward to cherishing quality time with loved ones while also reflecting on personal and professional growth aspirations. May this year bring opportunities for enhanced knowledge, skills, and fulfilment in our respective endeavours.”

IRFAN NASRULLAH BIN JAFLI, 24, BROADCAST JOURNALIST
“For this Labour Day I hope all levels of society respect and appreciate all the employees in Sarawak because all of them play an important role in our country’s development. Each field completes one another which makes our country prosperous and peaceful. To all workers, Happy Labour Day. No matter what your work, be proud and may Allah bless all of you.”

VEELINCIA GALIH, 26, OIL PALM CLERK
“Our company is organising a sports day for all the staff during Labour Day because employees here are divided into two, which are those working at the palm and in the office. Therefore, I hope that through this sports day we can help strengthen the bond between all staff. I also hope to get a good rest after the sports day and my only wish is that I can get a pay raise this year. This will give me more motivation to work harder.”
