Workshop on tackling illegal timber trade held

KUCHING: Forty training officers of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department attended a workshop on ‘Application of Guidelines For Verifying Timber Legality’ held at Imperial Hotel here recently.

The workshop was organised by Traffic International and the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) in collaboration with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Forest Department Sarawak (FDS).

The two-day workshop on July 24 – 25 was also attended by officials from STIDC, FDS and MTIB.

It aimed at enhancing participants’ knowledge, encourage information sharing and analysis and impart knowledge on operational procedures to tackle illegal timber trade. Additionally, it hoped to improve the operating process at the Customs Department.

Among the topics presented were ‘International Timber Trade and Current Market Scenarios in Malaysia’ by Traffic International officer Chen Hin Keong and ‘STIDC Registration Regulations, Conditions and Restrictions’ by its officer Suraya Mohd Ali.

MTIB officer Md Yusoff Ismail gave a talk on ‘Customs Code Identification and Categorisation of the Timber Products’ while Eveleen Augustine Lai from FDS talked on ‘Sarawak Timber Legality Verification System (STLVS)’.
