MUKAH: There seems to be so much complacency among local folk here pertaining to the current Covid-19 pandemic situation here despite one positive case in Bintulu recently was suspected to have originated from this district.

A lot have mixed feelings about adherence to the mandated standard operating procedures (SOPs) as initiatives to curb the spread of the fatal coronavirus.

New Sarawak Tribune yesterday found that generally the public here were still very careful of the threat the disease is posing.

However, lately, it has been a common sight in town that not all the people were wearing facemasks especially during the current recovery movement control order (RMCO). Adherence to social distancing of at least one metre between individuals was found to be not strictly followed in town yesterday.

Out of 20 people, it was observed that about 20 percent were not wearing facemasks while moving around in the streets or in the commercial buildings.

They have their own reasons for not wearing facemasks.

Kapitan Kang Boon Eong.

Kapitan Kang Boon Eong, 53, cautioned that people should not take for granted the current no Covid-19 case situation here.

He said the people must always be aware and careful of the threat Covid-19 is posing, and simultaneously must comply with the prevailing standard SOPs.

“We must by all means, try to avoid any recur of Covid-19 and cause problem here or anywhere in Sarawak or elsewhere,  there is no cure for the disease so far,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He called on the people to cooperate with the government by adhering to the SOPs such as wearing facemasks and social distancing of at least one metre in between individuals.

A government retiree, Anis Jana, 63, said people must not be easily content with the current no Covid-19 case situation here so far.

“We have to take care of ourselves including following the SOPs such as wearing facemasks, because the disease is invisible and still a threat to us,” he stressed.

A cashier at a supermarket also expressed her concern about the threat Covid-19 is posing.

“I still have to be careful all the time even though there is no case reported in this district so far,” the lady who preferred anonymity said.

A government pensioner, Jay Ulis in his 70s said his only worry about Covid-19 was the occurrence of any import case.

“So far the situation here is good and hopefully will always remain good,” he said.

On one positive case involving a college student here returning home to Bintulu recently, they all hoped that the student did not get infected by the disease here.
