Worrying increase in dengue cases

SELANGAU: The number of dengue cases in this district is very worrying, said Sibu Rural District Council (MDLBS) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

He explained that the number had increased drastically by 213 percent this year.

“According to the council’s public health report this month, 49 cases were recorded from January to July this year compared to seven cases in the same period last year (2019).

“We are quite worried because the number of dengue cases in Selangau district has increased drastically based on the report,” he said at the Covid-19 Outbreak and Rabies Outbreak Prevention Programme as well as a mega gotong-royong(mutual assist) in Selangau town officiated at by Tamin Assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang on Saturday (Aug 29).

According to the report, he explained that in comparison, the number of dengue cases increased by 213 percent from seven cases in 2019 to 49 cases this year.

“This sharp increase requires the cooperation of all to maintain the cleanliness around the residence of aedes breeding ground.

“MDLBS officials and those from Sibu Division Health Office will inspect the premises and strict action will be taken according to the law against those found defaulted by letting the existence of the aedes mosquito breeding places,” he said.

In this regard, he urged the people of Selangau and the surrounding area to always prioritise the cleanliness of their surroundings or place of residence.

Sempurai said that the mega gotong-royong is intended to ensure cleanliness and beautify Selangau town to remain clean and healthy.

Meanwhile, Gira in his speech urged the locals to help ensure that Selangau continues to remain a green zone pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also reminded the people of Selangau to continue complying with standard operating procedures (SOPs) to break the chain of infection.

At the same time he wanted the people of Selangau to work with authorities such as MDLBS and other government agencies to comply with SOP guidelines.

He expressed his confidence that Selangau could maintain the green zone status through the cooperation of the residents who always comply with the SOPs.

At the event, Gira also handed out Covid-19 and rabies outbreak awareness posters to the business community in Selangau town. He  was a keen participant in gotong-royong with the locals too.

Also present were chief minister’s political secretary Edwin Banta, Selangau district officer Inting Nyami, MDLBS deputy chairman Cr Wong Ching Yong, MDLBS acting secretary Teng Min Ming and local community leaders.
